Jogakbo
Seoul, South Korea2025

Shinjungang Market sits within a dense network of traditional markets in central Seoul, between the DDP, the Dongmyo flea market and the Sindang Creative Arcade below ground. Jogakbo takes its name from the Korean patchwork cloth sewn from remnants, and follows the same logic: instead of replacing the market’s ageing arcade, the project works with what is already there.

The proposal unfolds through three operations. Enhancing gives the market a new entrance, where beams added to the existing columns support a light, cantilevered canopy, and introduces the Ark at its centre: a suspended volume clad in reflective stainless steel beneath an ETFE roof, linking the underground arcade, the public space at street level and a planted rest area above. A market by day, it becomes a stage for busking and performance by night.

Adapting keeps the existing space frame and wraps it in layers of fire-resistant bamboo panels, programmable lighting and artwork, under a new polycarbonate roof that requires no additional columns or foundations. Integrated fans and sprinklers improve airflow and fire safety along the entire arcade.

Minimising protects the daily life of the market. Modular trusses are sized for small mobile cranes and joined with bolted connections, while work is scheduled overnight and on two Sundays a month, so traders never have to close.
